Posted in by lickashot | Edit

If you've read the usual sites, you've already seen the news. If not, it's confirmed that Baatin of Detroit group Slum Village died today. As far as I can see while scouring the web, there's no other official information as to the cause. Stay tuned.

Major Reocrd Companies and Apple Collaborate

Posted in by lickashot | Edit

Apple is working with the four largest record labels to stimulate digital sales of albums by bundling a new interactive booklet, sleeve notes and other interactive features with music downloads, in a move it hopes will change buying trends on its online iTunes store.

The talks come as Apple is separately racing to offer a portable, full-featured, tablet-sized computer in time for the Christmas shopping season, in what the entertainment industry hopes will be a new revolution. The device could be launched alongside the new content deals, including those aimed at stimulating sales of CD-length music, according to people briefed on the project.

Physical album sales have fallen sharply as music retailing has evolved from CD album purchases in retail outlets to digital downloads of songs from online stores.

Although consumers continue to purchase large amounts of digital music, they are buying individual tracks rather than higher-margin albums.

Apple is working with EMI, Sony Music, Warner Music and Universal Music Group, on a project the company has codenamed “Cocktail”, according to four people familiar with the situation.

The labels and Apple are working towards a September launch date for the project, which aims to boost interest in albums by bundling liner notes and video clips with the music.

“It’s all about re-creating the heyday of the album when you would sit around with your friends looking at the artwork, while you listened to the music,” said one executive familiar with the plans.

Apple wants to make bigger purchases more compelling by creating a new type of interactive album material, including photos, lyric sheets and liner notes that allow users to click through to items that they find most interesting. Consumers would be able to play songs directly from the interactive book without clicking back into Apple’s iTunes software, executives said.

“It’s not just a bunch of PDFs,” said one executive. “There’s real engagement with the ancillary stuff.”

The music companies declined to comment.

Album sales in the US fell 14 per cent in 2008 to 428.4m units, according to Nielsen SoundScan, which tracks retail sales data.

Twista feat. Kanye West - Alright

Posted in by lickashot | Edit

An iTunes bonus cut because, supposedly, Kanye West came through on production and his verse just a little too late in to the album production process. Nice feel to it with the piano instrumental - although not a hit track like Slow Jamz or Overnight Celebrity where they previously worked together.

Twista's Category F5 album drops today in stores.

That's talent right there. You'll see it come together about half way through the video. Dwele is one of the most underrated artists. Not sure if he likes remaining low key with his work or what, but the world needs more Dwele.

Yessssss! Hangover 2 in the works!!

Posted in , by lickashot | Edit

Warner Bros. was interested in developing a sequel to “The Hangover” before the movie was even finished. The film’s stars talked loosely about their ideas while promoting the soon-to-be smash in the run up to its release. MTV can now confirm “The Hangover 2″ — or whatever it ends up being called — is 100% happening, according to director Todd Phillips.

“We were thinking of sequel ideas when we were shooting, which sounds cocky, but we were doing it more because it was just fun to talk about ideas while hanging out on the set,” Phillips explained. “Two weeks ago I was saying, ‘let’s see how it works out.’ Now that the movie has really connected, it’s something we’re doing for sure.”

Phillips said they could start shooting the sequel as soon as spring, 2010 and he also confirmed that all of the flick’s central characters will return. “I wouldn’t do it unless all four guys were back. I love ‘The Hangover’ so much and I think we could crush it with the sequel. I’ve never had more fun making a movie, ever. Not that ‘Old School’ wasn’t fun, but these guys were so hungry and ready to kick ass everyday. We just all gelled so well on this film.”

Definitely one of the most entertaining films I've seen in a little while. If you haven't seen it, go out and check it.

DJ School Enrollment up 40% In Some Area's

Posted in by lickashot | Edit

This is pretty interesting, yet at the same time, it sort of undermines the values of what it means to have a passion to DJ. It's almost as if it's saying 'Hey, I can't get a job in my field, so I'll just fall back on being a DJ.'

DubSpot's enrollment has doubled this year, to around 250. "We've heard from students, time and time again, that they're feeling it's no longer just about money," says Dan Giove, founder and president of DubSpot. "People are longing for happiness through being creative."

New York is not the only city enjoying a deejay boomlet. In San Francisco, the D4LIFE Academy's student registrations are up 40% over the last 12 months. Sasha Tosic, founder of DJ4LIFE, also says enrollment has risen in Los Angeles, Chicago and Las Vegas. Robb Smith, owner of Central Florida-based FAME training school, has seen a 20% jump in deejay certifications this year. Aspiring deejays are flooding the schools, and flooding the market. "It's a lot easier to find a deejay these days," says Mark Rankin, who trains deejays in Chicago.

What's the appeal of being a deejay? For one, the occupation can stroke your ego. "To see everyone having a good time, to get a reaction from them, that's the thing I like," says Sean Williams, 29, who lost his postal service job in July and now deejays in the Bay Area (stage name: DJ Padd). "You can control everyone.' You can also pick up the basics in a month or two, and schools aren't ridiculously expensive.

Scratch!! Video Game Controller!!!

Posted in , , , by lickashot | Edit

This will be the controller for the game people are comparing to something like Guitar Hero and all those other music games, which I, personally, have never wasted my time with.

From the press release:

SCRATCH DECK combines two essential elements of the DJ and hip-hop experience—a free-spinning, touch sensitive turntable with a crossfader and 5 Akai Pro MPC-style drum pads. The turntable allows players to add their own style and manipulate the songs in real time, while the MPC-style drum pads give players the opportunity to perform and customize tracks by triggering samples using the very same pads that are the cornerstone of professional hip-hop beat production. Samples can either be pre-loaded into the game using 60 unique battle records that will ship with the software, or players can record and upload their own samples using a compatible USB microphone.

My Channel 3 News Debut

Posted in by lickashot | Edit

While I was in New Jersey for Mother's Day, I just had to stop in Philly to do some shopping and eat a Ishkabibble's.

But then I noticed that the parking meters were not on the street curbs any more. Along with all the good people in Philly, we were all confused because I have never seen this new world order non-sense. Check it out!
